A LITTLE COMIC · 4 PANELS

The Other Abbey Road

I once had a similar experience in another city. It wasn't London, but we ended up in the wrong place, and what stayed with me was the effort that went into explaining why this was actually quite a good place to be. For this comic, I moved the situation to Abbey Road DLR station, which is nowhere near the famous Beatles crossing. It seemed a suitable place for someone determined to explain why the journey had been a success.

The mistake itself didn't seem particularly strange. The determination to justify it did. I've sometimes wondered how much of that is cultural: admitting an error can seem perfectly ordinary to one person and almost unthinkable to another. But I'm never sure a country explains very much. You can find both attitudes in two people standing next to each other. Sometimes it's simply a matter of character — and how long someone is willing to stand in the wrong place defending it.

Four-panel comic: Ben brings Alex to Abbey Road DLR instead of the Beatles crossing. When Alex points out the mistake, Ben praises the quieter station and its bench.
